Even if lights-out in your house happens at a reasonable hours your elementary schooler may not get all the sleep she needs. In survey of 199 fifth graders, more than 60 percent admitted that they stay up late while their parents think they’re asleep.
Although kids have always tried to push back bedtime or read more exciting distractions to keep them awake. Kids have too much technology in their rooms. They can turn on the TV or computer or cell phone. That stimulates the brain. It doesn’t stimulate a sleep.
The result? The lack of sleeps lowers children’s immune system. They’re unable to concentrate, they’re less alert, and their academic performance goes down.
To ensure your kids get the recommended 10 hour of sleep per night, you actually remove the electronic temptation from kids’ rooms, even if it means setting up their desktop computers elsewhere in the house. She also advocates establishing a regular bedtime and policing it, not letting children eat late, and reinstating bedtime rituals. A nice hot bath, quiet talk with Mom or Dad, having a story read to them—those things signal the child’s mind that it is time to go to bed.
