On safe Ground (2)

Here are some of the ways that parents can prevent injuries:

Gates/stairways

• Mounted safety gates should be installed at the top and bottom of every stairway.

• Choose the “corral” method and gate off the main living area. Always close the gate when you leave the room, and never leave babies unattended.

• Never use “accordion-style” gates as these may trap and hurt little hands and fingers.

• Cover spaces exceeding four inches between balusters using durable Plexiglas or netting.

Electricals

• Outlets – Put outlet caps or covers on any outlet.

• Cords – Bundle cords of phones, answering machines, and small appliances with plastic wire ties and keep them out of reach of small children. Tie lamp cords in a knot around a table leg to prevent lamps from being pulled off.

Fire safety

• Keep all matches and lighters out of reach of children and teach them the dangers of playing with fire.

• Install fire/smoke detectors in every room and one carbon monoxide sensor on each floor, if possible.

• Have a fire extinguisher on every floor of your home.

• Develop a minimum of two fire escape routes and make sure your children are familiar with them.
