Protect your children from possible injuries by keeping these things in mind

Parents often worry about their children’s health and nutrition. After all, illnesses in young children can lead to death. But what they don’t consider is the fact that health problems are not the only causes of death in children. Accidents make up a significant percentage of mortalities in Filipino children. I

“Accidents are among the top three causes of child mortality in every age group,” In 1- to 4-year-old children, accidents come in second to pneumonia, with diarrhea and gastroenteritis being third. Among 5- to 9-year-olds, accidents are the number one cause of death, with pneumonia second and malignant neoplasm third. For 10- to 14-year-olds, accidents are still at the top with malignant neoplasm coming in second and heart diseases third.

More than 830,000 children die every year due to injuries, while millions suffer from injuries that will require long-term hospitalization and rehabilitation, which can also have lasting effects on their lives.

“When a child is left disfigured by a burn, paralyzed by a fall, brain damaged by near drowning, or emotionally traumatized by any serious incident, the effects can reverberate through the child’s life. Each…tragedy is unnecessary. We have enough evidence on what works. A known set of prevention programs should be implemented in all countries.”

The top five causes of injury and death among children are burns, falls, drowning, and poisoning.   It calls for parents to be more vigilant especially with things that relate to younger children. Parents should even take a course on first aid and CPR, as this will be of great help should an accident occur. “We’ll never know when we would need these skills to save the lives of other people, [especially those] of our loved ones.”
