How to Get Children to Read (6)

Mental Blocks

Some children have mental blocks about reading just as others have about mathematics.  They may want to develop interest in books but reading, for them, is nothing more than looking at a string of words.

This is a real problem requiring the patience and perseverance of parents.  They should take the one road with no blocks.  And this could be the child’s private world where he lets himself dream.  The idea is to find out what he dreams about.

Does the boy like cars and tinkering with them?  Is the girl whiz at computers and other electronic gadgets?  If yes, then focus on those findings.  A magazine illustrated profusely with new car models, or one displaying the latest in electronic instruments, would be a good start.

If you go shopping with your child, lead him to an automotive store, or a video shop.  These places usually have brochures and leaflets with information on their wares.  Let your child browse through this literature and perhaps bring them home for further study.

Start simply and slowly.  But if his interest in any of these things you show him is great enough, he’ll be making a beeline to those stores to learn more all by himself.  As he grows up he’ll be acquiring more intricate reading material and you can feel you’ve done a good job.
