There are times my heart goes out for babies who are left to sleep with a nanny or, worse, along in an expensive baby crib. No amount of toys, pillows, baby chimes or teddy bears can replace the warmth of a parent’s presence. It’s a soothing balm to any child’s innocent spirit. Just like breast-feeding, letting a baby sleep with the parents is one of the best ways to foster attachment parenting.
For those who come up with all sorts of excuses, here are more valid reasons why you can let your baby sleep with you at night:
● If you are breast-feeding, it is most convenient to have your baby within your arm’s reach, especially at night. Since you may be tired most of the day, chances are, it will take you ages to wake up for your baby’s feeding time. With your baby beside you, you can breast-feed even if you’re half-asleep!
● Your baby is more protected from night dangers. There are countless cases of baby suffocation, insects inflicting harm on sleeping babies, babies being burned alive in the confusion of a fire, babies falling or getting tangled… When you are just an arm’s reach away, your baby is safer.
● SIDS of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is best prevented with a parent sleeping nearby or beside a bay. A major cause of SIDS is abnormal breathing in infants. According to researches, a mother’s breathing pattern can cue a baby’s own breathing rhythm. Since a breast-feeding mother and her baby have a common breathing cycle, both mother and baby will be awakened with a long breathing gap.
