Dining out do’s and don’ts

April 23, 2009

Going to a restaurant as a family should be a treat for everyone, not a traumatic experience.  There is this one mother of four, shares some tips.

Do mind your manners.  We use meals at home as a time to practice table manners, public behavior and politeness to ensure our kids understand the importance of good behavior when dining out.

Don’t tolerate bad behavior.  Meal-time can be fun as long as it doesn’t go overboard.  If the kids are playing with their food too much, take it as a sign that they’re done eating and we finish up the meal.

Do be adventurous.  When we dine out, I look for restaurants with a great kids’ menu.  It’s also a good time for the kids to try different foods that we may not prepare at home.

Don’t cry over spilled milk.  Remember that humor is always a good solution when things are not going as planned.  After all, kids will be kids.  I’ve learned to roll with the punches.  Mishaps now, such a s spills or tantrums, make for funny memories later.
